Aaron is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Chattanooga, TN. He received his BFA in 3D Sculpture from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and works primarily in the expanded field of sculpture, including video, installation, and performance. He was a founding member of the Apothecary project space in 2010; founding member and Curator of the Swine gallery; and Co-Founder and Director of ARC: Artist Residency Chattanooga, established in 2016.

Aaron Cowan creates sculptural structures and situations that explore power, masculinity, and Southern identity. Primarily constructed with materials associated with play and physical labor, Cowan’s works depict toys, forts, guns and other playful references mixed with real world implications. Cowan mines cultural paradigms and identity politics of growing up in the Southeastern US, drawing from lived and shared histories of toxic masculinity, boyish mischief, and the struggle to reconcile contradictory modes of living. This reconciliation exists between play and danger, self-sabotage and self-help, maturity and senescence. There is an examination of wants and needs, of self and Other; struggle, drive, desire, violence & victory. To examine one's self is to learn, change, and grow; Cowan's work is an interpretation of self, but also of the values and climates of the realities in which he works and lives, reflecting observations of the world around him to provoke and confront the viewer's perspective.
